FAQs

Boathouse scents are proprietary blends forumulated by Winnie in our Friday Harbor studio. We are located on San Juan Island in Washington state. The island is accessible by water or air.

We do not have a “store”, however we sell our product and you can try them at the super-groovy Deer Hazel on Spring Street in Friday Harbor or at the Roche Harbor Art Aisle. We also sell through lots of stores nationwide and when we get the coding straight will have a Store Locator page. For now, please message me and I’ll check to see who’s closest to your town. You might be able to visit the studio, which is always a mess. Message me through Insta!

We use both, and please read on to understand their safety: Synthetics are not “bad” and naturals “good”, or clean or dirty. There are restricted NATURAL materials, which stands to reason because they are from plants trying to either attract or repel, or even poison enemies in natural settings. The industry synthesizing a fragrance molecule out from other non-scented and therefore not useful molecules can actually make synthetics a safer option to achieve a fragrance goal – all the unnecessary stuff is not present, so there are fewer allergens and other undesirable reactants. We use synthetic materials and they are IFRA regulated. You can find ALL fragrance safety info here: IFRA SAFETY IN FRAGRANCE. Don’t listen to the internet unless it’s directly from IFRA especially regarding phthalates and such. EXCEPT, DO follow @labmuffin, a chemist who sets everyone straight on SO MANY THINGS including parabans and phthalates and such, CLICK CLICK.

There is so much misinformation out there and all manner of nonsense about “clean” fragrance, the dangers of synthetic materials (that are regulated, btw) and marketing efforts to get you to fear one house and buy from another. This is a nuanced  question which usually originates from a marketplace which sews fear in consumers to direct their focus toward a specific brand. Bottom line (and sorry, I don’t mean to be contrary!), “clean” is a misnomer and has no meaning to perfumers. The use of the word in marketing in the EU has been banned, rightfully so. Perfumers either comply with IFRA standards, or they don’t.  I do. 🙂 I can assure that my products are safe, they are, but yes, the subject is RIFE with misinformation on the internet, kinda like watching FOX vs. CNN, seriously the best analogy 🤣.

The super-mega bottom line for Boathouse is that we are IFRA compliant in our use of essential oils, absolutes, tinctures and synthetic fragrance materials. I can give you a stack of SUPER BORING safety data sheets (ew), but they all just say the same thing with numbers and symbols (LOL).

We ship UPS flat-rate, but only within the USA because of regulations and we are small. If you would like to return your purchase, send it back in unused condition within 7 days, I’ll refund the order if it’s in perfect condition.

For sure! CLICK HERE to order our Discovery Set with all of our scent samples plus Groovy Art Cards that are trade-worthy and have a lot of nice info on the back, including a Spotify playlist that you can listen to for full effect.

Shipments usually go out within three days, unless I’m waiting for a li’l sticker or label or lid or something, but I’ll let you know if there is a delay.

You should receive a tracking number at the time of shipment leaving the Boathouse. If you don’t, it means I dropped the ball, which happens sometimes and I apologize.

Sure, if it hasn’t shipped yet. Seriously it’s just me running around in circles, reach out!

We always want to make it right, just email me!
